Standing on the north pier, the extreme tip of the city as it looks to the east, is the Red Lighthouse, one of Ancona’s most romantic symbols.
And it is here, past the city’s old port, that our journey ends. Residents of Ancona feel a deep love for this place, imbued with charm and peace. The restoration work on the pier that houses the Red Lighthouse have made the upper walkway fully operational; guard rails have been installed around the entire perimeter of the pier, allowing visitors to enjoy this fabulous place in complete safety. Sunset is the best time to admire the spectacular views from this walkway. Facing the sea and the horizon is the lovers’ bench, a large crescent-shaped seat from which the best sunsets on the Adriatic can be viewed. On the wall at the base of the lighthouse, the street artist Icks has painted a temporary portrait of actress Monica Vitti. Indeed, the Red Lighthouse itself was immortalised in Mario Monicelli’s film The Girl with the Pistol. Starring Vitti, the film was set in the English seaside town of Brighton.
The arrival and departure of passenger ferries complete the atmosphere and the view, making the Red Lighthouse a truly magical place.
